PDF: Adobe Acrobat Reader Lite

Portable document formats are great, until the company who makes the reader, let’s call them Adobe, decides to form a stretegic alliance with Yahoo!, then include a bunch of other garbage with the portable document format reader that no one, except maybe lawyers and assistants to Congressmen, would ever need to use. Now, the reader is so horrendously bloated that it takes up to a minute to load the main program, and almost a minute to load in your web browser; which is just unbearable.
This sets the climate for a real need for a “lite” version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. A lovely guy, calling himself neo, I mean, deXter, can along andstreamlined Adobe Acrobat Reader. He made the installer 6 MB instead of 30, and the installation 19 MB instead of 60.

Here’s how to install and use Adobe Acrobat Reader Lite:

  1. Uninstall Adobe Acrobat Reader. Remove doesn’t work? Try “Change,” then select “Remove.” Of course, even though you disabled the Quick Launcher from starting via the registry, you’ll still need to restart your PC.
  2. Download Adobe Acrobat Reader Lite (original post, download via rapidshare).
  3. Installing it easy, almost disconcertedly so. Run the installer, then it is installed. No prompts, no splash screen, no nothing. Just Adobe Acrobat Reader there, on your desktop.
  4. Open it. By the time you’re reading this it is open. Yes, seriously.

It’s not clear in the post if this deXter made it so the installer copies nppdf32.dll to your web browser directory or not. So, if it doesn’t work within your browser, just copy %programfiles%\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\Browser\nppdf32.dll to The plugins directory of yourt browser. That’s %programfiles%\Internet Explorer\PLUGINS for Internet Explorer, %programfiles%\mozilla\Firefox\plugins for Firefox, %programfiles%Opera\program\plugins for Opera. You may also need to edit a config file for it to work properly for Opera.

If the brower plugin doesn’t work, you can always suffer through opening the file directly.
